Incident Purse theft
Location ShopRite Supermarket Black Rock Tpke
Date of Incident December 2012
The Fairfield Police Department Detective Bureau is investigating a purse snatching that occurred on 12/21/2012, at approximately 4:00pm, at Shop Rite, Black Rock Tpke. The victim was an 86 year old woman.
The victim stated she was in the frozen food aisle when she was approached by a man who asked her some questions about frozen dinners. When she turned around to answer him, she momentarily turned away from her purse, which was in her shopping cart. When she eventually went to pay for her groceries, she discovered her wallet missing from her purse. She believes the subject purposely distracted her while someone else stole her wallet.
She described the man as black, approximately 5'8", slender, 30's-40's, w/ glasses, and a beard/mustache. He was also wearing a dark hat / dark clothing.
Investigators reviewed store videotapes and determined the male described above was working in conjunction with a female, black, approximately 5'7", heavyset, 30's-40's, with long curly brown hair pulled back with a dark headband. She was wearing a brown leather coat.
The two moved about the store separately, each pushing a shopping cart with merchandise. The video clearly shows the male distracting the victim while the female suspect steals the wallet (Theft itself not depicted on YouTube). The female suspect then quickly thumbs through the victim’s wallet before hiding it in her own purse. Both suspects then abandon their shopping carts and flee the store without making any purchases.
We are attempting to identify the subjects involved and are asking citizens to review the pictures.
