The Chief of Police is the Chief Executive Officer of the Fairfield Police Department and is appointed by the Board of Police Commissioners with the approval of the First Selectman.  The Chief of Police has authority over, directs and oversees all members and divisions of the department.


Chief Kalamaras was hired by the Fairfield Police Department in January of 2000 where he served as a patrolman for ten years. In his time as a patrolman, he has held positions in several specialty assignments to include the Motorcycle Unit, Crash Investigation, Emergency Services Unit, Dive Team, and Traffic Enforcement.

In April of 2010, Chief Kalamaras was promoted to Sergeant where he was assigned to the Patrol Division. In 2011, he was reassigned as the Special Services Division Sergeant where he supervised several units within that division.

In January of 2015, Chief Kalamaras was promoted to Lieutenant, where he served in Patrol as the evening shift commander. In 2016, he was reassigned as the Commander of the Special Services Division. In this position, Chief Kalamaras supervised the Traffic Safety Unit, Crash Investigation Unit, Marine Division, Marina Guards, Vehicle Maintenance Unit and Motorcycle Unit. Additionally, he was the department’s public information officer and coordinated public programs such as neighborhood watch. Chief Kalamaras has also served for six years as the Emergency Services Unit Commander.

In January 2019 Chief Kalamaras was promoted to Captain where he served as the Special Services Bureau Commander and later transferred to Command the Field Services Bureau.

In April 2019, Chief Kalamaras was selected to attend the 276th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico Virginia where he received a graduate certificate from the University of Virginia. Chief Kalamaras holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Sacred Heart University and a Masters Degree in Public Safety from the University of Virginia. He is a proud veteran of the armed forces. Chief Kalamaras has severed as the chair of the SCR Advisory Committee at the Connecticut Technology Transfer Center and has been a member since 2016.

Chief Kalamaras was sworn in as Chief on January 22, 2021 and serves as the Department’s 11th Chief of Police.
