The Fairfield Police Department prides itself in offering a meaningful educational and work experience through an internship program. The internship program allows college students an opportunity to personally evaluate the profession of law enforcement. The Fairfield Police Department will make every attempt to allow students the opportunity to experience each division of our agency including but not limited to patrol, traffic, investigative, records, communications, marine (seasonal availability), and animal control.
The Office of Professional Standards is responsible for the management of the internship program including application and coordination of the student’s schedules.
- All students considered for an internship must be at least eighteen (18) years old and in good academic standing with their college or university.
- Students interested in an internship with the Fairfield Police must have their college internship coordinator submit a letter of introduction for the student to the police department. (The letter should include the exact dates and hours the intern wishes to serve each week.)
- Students must earn college credits for their work in the internship with their respective schools.
- All applicants will be required to submit to and pass a background investigation.
- Preference will be given to Fairfield residents.
Before the Fairfield Police Department can begin to consider a student for an internship, the following information is required:
If the application packet is not complete or is not received by the Office of Professional Standards by the deadline, it may prevent the student from being considered for an internship.
- Fairfield Police Internship Application
- Signed Liability Waiver
- Signed Confidentiality Agreement
- Fairfield Police Authorization for Release of Personal Information Form which includes authorization to obtain a consumer/investigative credit reports;
- An updated resume which includes date of birth, social security number, and employment history
- Three (3) personal references with telephone numbers and addresses
- Two (2) current passport pictures
It is the responsibility of the student to advise the Office of Professional Standards of the Fairfield Police Department regarding any change of address, telephone number, or withdrawal from the program at any time during the semester.
The deadlines for submitting internship applications are as follows:
- Spring Semester: Application must be received by December 1st.
- Summer Semester: Application must be received by April 1st.
- Fall semester: Application must be received by August 1st.
After the applications are received, and if accepted, students will be tentatively scheduled pending a thorough background investigation. Occasionally, the backgrounds may be delayed. Students should remain in contact with their college internship coordinator and should not report to the police department until they receive confirmation from the Office of Professional Standards regarding the status of their background investigations.
